BURNT OFFERINGS - A SOLO EXHIBITION
June - July 2014
Arts & Ecology Centre, Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens
In 2013 a ‘love lock’ on the Pont des Arts in Paris with a simple drawing of a tree caught Catherine’s eye. This image became the inspiration for a series of new works exploring her love of the coastal heathlands and their need for protection. With over 80% of the 21 million Australians living within 100 kilometres of the coast this places enormous pressure on our coastal wallum habitats.
The motif of a traditional patchwork house repeated, like a quilt, depicts the new landscape that threatens our local environment. The hand gesture marks the artist’s personal connection to the story telling and the use of meditative, repetitive marks enables Catherine to draw the viewer into her artwork to experience an emotional current.
Burnt Offerings celebrates the importance of fire in the wallum environment for its regeneration. The beauty of native banksia and hakea are interpreted through a variety of print techniques (copper drypoint, multi plate lino, stencilling and digital prints) combined with drawing, carving, stitchery, embossing, pyrography or metalwork to create evocative artworks.
